I’ve been revisiting the case of Kelly Marie Ware and something that’s been lingering in my mind is the emotional toll on her family, especially considering she wasn’t immediately reported missing back in 1983. It saddens me to think about the uncertainty her loved ones must have felt during those months of not knowing where she was or what had happened. With her remains only officially identified in December 1984, it must have been a challenging time of grief and questions. After all that waiting and hoping for answers, finding out she was a victim of Gary Ridgway, a man responsible for so much suffering, must have been devastating. My heart really goes out to her family and friends who had to live through this nightmare. They’re often the silent victims in these tragedies, and their constant strength and bravery while seeking justice and remembering Kelly is truly commendable.
I was reading through some old articles on the Green River Killer case, and Kelly Ware's story really struck me. It's devastating to think of how long it took for authorities to officially recognize her as one of the victims—over a year from the last time anyone heard from her! I can't begin to imagine what her family must have gone through during that time. Being in such a vulnerable position, she unfortunately became an easy target for Ridgway, like so many others. It's such a grim reminder of how dangerous it was for young women in that era, and it certainly sparks a lot of reflection on the changes (or lack thereof) regarding the safety and perception of sex workers today. I hope finding some justice in the conviction of Ridgway brought Kelly's family a fraction of the peace they deserve. Thoughts go out to everyone touched by this case.
Has anyone else been following the case of Kelly Marie Ware and feeling such sorrow for her family? I was struck by the fact that she called her mother from a payphone on that last day in July 1983. Imagining the hope and worry her mom must have felt during that call is chilling. It’s hard to come to terms with how vulnerable Kelly and other young women were back then, and how Ridgway was able to exploit that vulnerability.
Despite the delayed identification, it’s crucial that we remember Kelly and her story. Knowing her remains were found so close to others is haunting, yet somehow it binds them together in this tragic chapter of their lives. These women deserve to be remembered for who they were, not just the horrific crimes that ended their lives. My heart goes out to Kelly's family and friends—I hope they’ve found some peace knowing that Ridgway was finally held accountable. Could anyone share if there have been any memorials or tributes held for Kelly and the other victims?
