I recently came across some more information about Opal Mills, and it's absolutely devastating to think about what her family went through. I can't imagine the pain her brother Garrett must have felt, knowing the last time he spoke to his sister, she needed his help. It must be a haunting memory for him. Both Opal and Cynthia Hinds were planning on doing something as normal as a painting job, and then this happened. It's a terrible reminder of how dangerous that time was for so many young women in Washington. It's heartbreaking knowing that the person responsible roamed free for so long. Her family deserves all the support in the world for the nightmare they must have endured waiting for justice. What a courageous thing for them to finally get some answers with Ridgway’s arrest. My thoughts are with all the families still affected by his actions.
Whenever I think about Opal Mills and the call she made to her brother Garrett, it truly sticks with me. I can't imagine the weight of carrying around that last conversation, not knowing it would be the final time they'd ever speak. Such a young girl, still figuring out life and full of dreams, robbed of her future. It's just so senseless.
The bond she had with Garrett must have been special, and I can only hope he finds some comfort in knowing she turned to him in what was probably one of her last moments of need. I wish the world had been different for Opal and that she could have had all the chances she deserved to pursue her dreams of modeling. It's crucial that we remember these victims as the individuals they were, instead of just statistics in a notorious case. My thoughts are with Opal’s family and everyone affected by this tragedy.
