I’ve been thinking a lot about Vera Martin and how she might have ended up in Dorothea Puente’s boarding house. It’s so upsetting to think that someone like Vera, who might have been seeking a safe place to live during a vulnerable time, fell into the hands of a predator like Puente. I read somewhere that a lot of boarders there were receiving social security benefits. It’s such a tragic thought that these benefits, which were meant to support them, became a target for Puente to exploit. There's not a lot of public information on Vera’s life before she became one of Puente’s victims, which makes me wonder about her background and the events leading up to her residence at the boarding house. It must be incredibly painful for her family and friends to know how her life ended, and I hope they’ve found some peace despite the lack of closure on the exact details surrounding her death. It’s just another reminder of how important it is to look out for our elderly and vulnerable neighbors and ensure they have a safe and trusted community around them.
