I've been digging into the Golden Years Murders and can't stop thinking about how the community responded at the time. Living alone as an elderly person is hard enough, and the fear that swept through Richmond must have been terrifying. Elizabeth Seibert and the other victims were targeted in the safest places they should have been able to find: their own homes. It's disheartening that neighbors and friends felt the need to dramatically change their lifestyles—installing alarms, buying guns—just to feel some kind of security. It makes me question, did the rise in security measures actually help, or was it more about creating a sense of safety amidst the chaos? This case highlights so many societal issues, from how the vulnerable are targeted to how communities react in times of fear. My thoughts go out to the families who never saw justice for their loved ones. How is this still unresolved, all these years later?
