I've been thinking a lot about Brian Scott Card and the tragic end he and his friends faced at the hands of Herbert Mullin. I keep coming back to the same haunting question: did they have any inkling of the danger they were in when Mullin first approached them pretending to be a park ranger? It's chilling to think about how they likely trusted him, given his guise of authority. These boys were just out there to enjoy nature, and it's awful that their adventure turned into something so horrific. It’s unsettling how Mullin, a man with clear signs of mental illness, was able to wander around freely, ending their lives and the lives of others before he was finally stopped. My thoughts go out to the families who were robbed of the chance to see Brian and his friends grow up and live full lives. It's a dark reminder of the importance of mental health intervention and how crucial it is to take steps in supporting those who need help, hopefully preventing tragedies like this in the future.
