Has anyone else been struck by the circumstances around Morse's eventual capture? It's chilling to think that it took a random visitor at the FBI Tour to recognize him and lead to his arrest. It's so often the little coincidences that change the course of such horrific cases. I can't imagine the relief Carol Ronan's family must have felt when they heard he was finally caught, although it surely couldn't take away the pain of their loss. For all his crimes and the trail of devastation he left, it's oddly poetic that his downfall was due to something as everyday as a tourist attraction. My thoughts are with all the families affected by his actions.

I recently came across a disturbing detail related to the case of Carol Helen Ronan, and it just makes this whole situation feel even more chilling. It's hard to imagine how the family of someone like Carol coped with the knowledge that the person responsible for her death had been leading a life of crime for so long before finally being caught. I read that Hugh Bion Morse had a pretty grotesque history, including being committed to a state hospital for therapy, only to be released and continue his devastating path. It makes me wonder about the systems in place back then and if they truly helped anyone, or just delayed the inevitable. Seeing how his crimes spread across states reflects poorly on how information was shared between jurisdictions. My heart goes out to Carol's friends and family, as the pain of losing someone is compounded by the thought that maybe, just maybe, things could have turned out differently if Morse had been stopped sooner. There must have been so much anger and frustration mixed in with their grief.
