I’ve been diving into the tragic case of Blanche Boggs, and something that really stands out to me is the sheer randomness of the attack. Boggs seemed to be leading such an unassuming life after returning to Spokane following her husband's passing, yet she fell victim to such horrific violence. It’s truly terrifying to think that someone with a history like Hugh Bion Morse could just slip through the cracks repeatedly, allowing him to continue his spree across the country.
What really troubles me is the lack of justice from the mental health system at the time. Morse was committed to a state hospital but was released after just two years, despite his dangerous behavior. It’s heartbreaking to imagine how many lives could have been spared if there had been stricter controls or longer treatment periods for individuals with his mindset. While I’m relieved Morse spent the remainder of his life behind bars, it’s painful to think about the suffering endured by Blanche and others before he was finally captured.
My heart goes out to Blanche’s loved ones, who had to endure such a brutal loss. Let's hope that in honoring her memory and sharing her story, we continue to seek ways to prevent such tragedies in the future.
