Has anyone else been following the Marvin Lorenzo Newkirk angle closely? I'm finding it baffling how someone with a prior conviction for second-degree murder was out and about, ultimately becoming a suspect in this case. It's so hard to reconcile the fact that people with such violent pasts get the chance to be part of society again without sufficient oversight. It just feels like the system missed a critical point somewhere. Newkirk's arrest in Whiteville by the Columbus County deputies definitely took some skillful and cautious police work, but it makes me wonder how close he was to slipping through the cracks again. How do we ensure that repeat offenders get the scrutiny they need to prevent tragedies like the one Nathaniel Turner suffered? Nathaniel's loss is a devastating hit to his family and community, and no one should have to feel such an unfair loss. My heart truly goes out to them as they navigate this terribly difficult time.
