I'm really saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Afdera "Penny" Hatten. It’s absolutely devastating thinking about her final moments, surrounded by chaos and violence. I've been thinking about the significance of the cane found underneath her. It's such a small detail but speaks volumes about who she was and her vulnerability. It’s heartbreaking that it might have been something she relied on daily and was with her when she needed help the most. It's difficult to comprehend how someone could be so cruel, especially given her circumstances. She seemed to be struggling already, and yet someone took it upon themselves to target her in such a brutal way. Does anyone else feel like this might reveal something about the perpetrator—a disregard for the person behind the vulnerability? I hope the police can find something in the surveillance footage or get more information from locals. Penny deserves justice, and her community deserves answers. My thoughts are with her loved ones and all those who knew her. Peace cannot come soon enough.

I can't believe we're discussing another senseless act of violence in our community. Penny was someone you could always rely on to flash a smile, regardless of her own struggles, and that's saying a lot given the hardships she faced lately. I remember seeing her around the neighborhood, often chatting at the corner store or offering a kind word to those she passed. That she met such a tragic fate is unsettling and simply unjust. For those of us living in the area, it's hard not to feel a mix of anxiety and sadness, knowing this has happened so close to home. The fact that no suspect has been identified is frustrating, but it’s also a stark reminder of how much work we need to do to prevent these tragedies. Thank you to the officers and detectives who are working hard to get answers and, hopefully, some justice for Penny and her loved ones. If there’s any good that might come out of this, I truly hope it’s that someone with information will do the right thing and come forward. Maybe then Penny's family and our community can start to heal. And to anyone reading this, please stay safe and look out for one another.
