I've been following the tragic case of Michael Richard Kegg III and his stepmother, Malisa Kegg, and I can't stop thinking about how brave Michael must have been in those terrifying final moments. It's so moving to hear about his attempt to protect Malisa and himself from the reported abuse. The fact that this incident, which began with fire reports, was reclassified as a double homicide only adds to the mystery and heartbreak surrounding it.
It's hard not to admire Michael's service background—being a Navy veteran and having served on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower really speaks to his character. Members of our military make sacrifices daily, and to see him lose his life trying to defend his family is beyond tragic.
I can't imagine the pain his mother, Julia, and the rest of his family are going through, trying to come to terms with such a heavy loss. Organizing a fundraiser to manage the funeral and legal costs shows just how close-knit they must be, trying to give Michael a proper farewell. I truly hope authorities are able to find some answers soon. Cases like this are a grim reminder of the violence some people face even within their own homes.
