I was reading more about the heartbreaking case of Gena Lee Turner and her friends, and I'm struck by how little has changed in terms of addressing parole for dangerous offenders. It's infuriating to think that Jerry Walter McFadden had been released multiple times despite his violent history. How do we, as a society, continue to allow repeated chances for some individuals who clearly showcase a pattern of violence? My heart goes out to Gena's family and the other victims' loved ones who had to suffer such an unimaginable loss, knowing it could have been prevented if the system had been stricter. I hope discussions around this case have led to improved parole protocols—it's the least that can be done to honor their memory.
