It's so tragic to think about how these brave veterans, like William Holloway, survived the battles and hardships of war, only to have their lives cut short in a place meant for healing. I'm particularly troubled by how Reta Mays managed to operate over such a long period without detection. Was there really no oversight or internal checks that could have flagged the irregularities sooner? I can’t even imagine the torment his family must feel, knowing that the very people entrusted with his care betrayed him in such a horrific manner. It's crucial that institutions learn from these failures to ensure that no other families have to endure such sorrow. How do we put in place more effective systems of accountability? My thoughts are with all the families affected by this tragedy.

I'm still grappling with the enormity of what happened at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center and wanted to share my thoughts about the systemic failures that allowed this tragedy to unfold. It's truly devastating that William Holloway, along with six other veterans, entrusted their care to a facility that ultimately betrayed them. These men dedicated their lives to serving our country, only to face such a cruel end in what should have been a sanctuary for them. What really worries me is how Mays' actions went unnoticed for so long. It's alarming to think about the lack of oversight and checks in place that could have stopped her before reaching William and the others. She shouldn't have had access to insulin or even the ability to administer medications in the first place. It's chilling to consider how her behavior, the comments she made, and the emergencies that occurred during her shifts didn't raise more red flags sooner. I hope lessons have been learned and that the VA is taking concrete steps to ensure that nothing like this can ever happen again. Facilities caring for our veterans must be held to the highest standards. My thoughts are with the families of William and the other victims as they try to find some sense of peace after such senseless loss.
