Has anyone else noticed how crucial the role of the night shift can be in healthcare settings? I was reading about the tragic case of Reta Mays and what happened to Robert Edge Sr. It just got me thinking about how understaffing and lack of oversight during these hours can lead to disastrous outcomes. It’s incredibly upsetting to know that the ones we trust to care for our loved ones could use that opportunity to harm them instead. My heart goes out to Edge Sr. and his family. I can’t imagine the shock and betrayal they must feel. The VA Medical Center should have had stricter protocols and supervision. It’s alarming how Mays was able to administer insulin so freely without being authorized to do so. The lessons here are important for all hospitals, not just VA centers. Implementing tighter controls and checks, especially during less-supervised shifts, could prevent future tragedies. It's time for systemic change so that veterans and all patients receive the safe care they deserve. ?
