Does anyone else find it strange that Charles "Smokey" Gauthier's sterling silver ring inscribed with "DAD" hasn't turned up? You'd think that might be something a passerby would notice if it was dropped along the road or near the area where the shoe prints were found. Even if someone picked him up, that ring is such a personal item, you'd expect it to have been found or circulated somewhere, even if he sadly might not have been. In similar cases, personal items found like jewelry often lead to breakthroughs, so it’s puzzling that this hasn’t given us any new leads. Just another layer to how perplexing this whole situation is after all these years. What do you all think?
Has anyone looked into whether there were any reports of unusual activity along M-35 around the time Smokey disappeared? I’ve been reading about the searches and noticed that they didn’t mention much about interviewing folks who might have been driving or living nearby. Given how he was last seen around the Empire Iron Mine and was possibly picked up by a motorist, it seems like the kind of place where someone might’ve seen something out of the ordinary. Especially with tire tracks nearby, it just feels like a missed angle. I guess it’s a long shot after all this time, but you never know what someone might remember if they think back to that day. I just hope his family finds the answers they’re looking for someday.
I was thinking about how incredibly challenging it must be to investigate cases like Charles "Smokey" Gauthier's due to the time that has passed and the initial conditions. Considering he had dementia, the same questions keep running through my mind—did anyone review local surveillance footage from businesses near the road where his shoe prints and tire tracks were found? It's a long shot given the era, but maybe something small was missed. I hope the local community continues to stay vigilant for any potential new leads or information. Gauthier's situation is so unsettling, and it makes me wonder how effective the coordination was among the search teams at the time given they had K-9 units and aerial searches involved. Would love to hear from anyone who might have insights or stories from that time.
