In the spring of 1990 Bertha Scott, an 85-year-old resident of Riverside Health Care Center in Missoula, Montana, was found dead in her bed on May 2. She had Alzheimer’s and was restrained at night; her death was first attributed to natural causes. A nurse had noticed a large, unexplained bruise on Bertha’s neck and an open window that should have been secured, details that later drew scrutiny.
After another resident, 87-year-old Nancy Lagerquist, was abducted, assaulted, and found dead in the Clark Fork River two months later, authorities exhumed Bertha’s body. An autopsy showed Bertha had been raped and strangled. Biological evidence recovered from her body produced a DNA profile of an unknown assailant. Investigators questioned a man seen near the facility and considered an employee as a person of interest; the employee was later cleared.
No perpetrator has been publicly identified. Did anyone have contact with either woman at Riverside in 1990 or remember unusual activity around the facility that spring?
