I was recently delving into the Samuel Little case, and I found myself reflecting on Mary Jo Brosley’s story. It’s just so devastating to think about the challenges she faced and how they might have made her more vulnerable. I can’t help but think of the systemic issues that seemed to allow Little to go undetected for so long. It’s infuriating that so many women, like Mary Jo, were essentially invisible to the system.
Her struggles with alcoholism and the fact she had to leave her son behind made her story particularly distressing. I keep thinking about her son, now grown, and how he must have lived all these years not knowing what happened to his mother. It’s a harsh reminder of how these victims were more than statistics—they were mothers, daughters, sisters, each with their own story. It's somewhat reassuring that her family finally got answers, but the years that passed in uncertainty must have been incredibly difficult for them.
Mary Jo deserved so much more, and it’s cases like hers that remind me of the importance of improving our systems to protect society’s most vulnerable. What are everyone’s thoughts on how law enforcement might improve in the future to prevent something like this from happening again?
