Did anyone else notice how the system seemed to fail Jesse Clarence Dunlap and his family? It's tragic enough that Jesse lost his life in such a senseless way back in 1986, but the fact that Mervin Ray Hughes managed to walk free not long after his initial conviction and then went on to cause even more devastation is just gut-wrenching. I'm really feeling for Jesse’s family, and I can't imagine the frustration they faced knowing that this young man who took Jesse's life got the chance to reoffend. It's cases like these that make you question how things might have been different if justice had been served more thoroughly the first time. What's ultimately more tragic is those lives lost in the 1999 shootings — possibly preventable. Would love to hear others' thoughts or any insights into how parole considerations have evolved since then, if at all.
