I've been following the Wingfield case and can't help but think about how vulnerable our elderly community is, especially living alone. Lydia Wingfield, at 78, should have felt safe in her own home. It's incredibly upsetting that someone was able to target and harm the most defenseless members of society for so many years. It's even more frustrating knowing there were missed opportunities in tracking Hopewell earlier. If he’d been required to give a DNA sample during any of his previous arrests, could we have saved Lydia and the others? Makes me wonder if there are more proactive measures the justice system could take to better protect those unable to protect themselves. My heart goes out to Lydia’s family and all the families of Hopewell's victims for having to endure such preventable loss.
