I came across some interesting info about Robert David Winch while digging through this case again, and it just breaks my heart to think about what he went through. It's always struck me how vulnerable Robert must have felt, coming from Kalamazoo and navigating life after running away from his foster home. He was just trying to find his footing in a new city, and that's when Gacy crossed his path.
There's this moment that gets to me – when Robert was at McDonald's with a friend. Being in a public place, he might have felt a sense of safety, only to be deceived by Gacy's guise as a friendly contractor. I can't imagine the terror he faced once he realized the truth. It's like he never even had a real chance to feel settled or safe in his new environment before Gacy took that away from him.
I think we should also remember the personal items this monster left behind, like Robert’s tiger’s eye belt buckle. It’s such a poignant reminder of his presence and individuality, something that should have been cherished by friends and family instead of being part of evidence in a murder case. My thoughts are with Robert's family and all the families affected by Gacy's horrific actions. Let's hope that remembering these details helps to keep these young men's memories alive.
