I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact of trauma on the families of victims like Kathleen Hurley. It's so difficult to imagine how her loved ones coped with her disappearance and the horrific details that emerged later. Losing someone to such unimaginable violence must have been devastating, and having those painful memories resurface every time the case was discussed in media must have been unbearable. The community’s horror at the discoveries in Poughkeepsie probably mirrored what her family felt on an intensely personal level. It’s a stark reminder of the enduring pain violent crimes can inflict on families and the importance of offering them support as they try to heal from such a tragedy. I find myself hoping the community can come together to provide some sort of solace or comfort to the families even years down the line. It’s the least we can do to honor Kathleen and the other victims who lost their lives so tragically.
