I’ve been thinking a lot about the way young women like Barbara Ann Derry were forced to navigate a world that didn’t always prioritize their safety. In the early 70s, hitchhiking was a common mode of travel, especially for young people without access to cars. It’s just devastating to think about how a simple, everyday action could lead to such tragic consequences. Barbara was only 18, and like many her age, she probably thought she was invincible. Learning that her life was taken by someone as reprehensible as Warren Leslie Forrest is just incredibly saddening. The details of how she was found are so haunting; no one should have to face such horror. What we know about Forrest’s other crimes makes it quite clear that he had a pattern, and it’s chilling to think of how many lives, like Barbara’s, he may have impacted. I really hope that one day there might be more definitive answers for her family. Even though Forrest is behind bars, which is a small comfort, knowing that justice was fully served for each of his victims might bring at least a shred of peace to those they've left behind. My thoughts are with Barbara's loved ones.
