I've been revisiting the Michigan Murders case, particularly Maralynn Skelton's tragic story from 1969, and something that stands out to me is how dangerous hitchhiking was back then. I can't stop thinking about how common it was for young people, like Maralynn, to hitchhike, not realizing the risks they were taking. Back then, it was just seen as a normal means of getting around, but in hindsight, it's chilling to think about how vulnerable it made them to individuals like John Norman Collins. It's heart-wrenching how this once innocent way to travel could lead to such devastating outcomes. Maralynn, at only 16, had her whole life ahead of her. Her decision to hitchhike that day was tragically commonplace for the time. It must have left her loved ones with such deep questions and grief, knowing a simple attempt to get from one place to another connected her to Collins' path. I can’t help but wonder how many lives could have been saved with more awareness, but I know that those were different times. My thoughts go out to Maralynn’s family and all the families affected by these unspeakable acts.
