I've been following the Rosemary Perez case and something that continues to haunt me is how she was found. Imagining her being discovered wrapped in a sheet on a sidewalk is just so troubling. It makes me think about how desperately the world needs to protect its vulnerable populations, because this could've been prevented. Rosemary's family and friends must have gone through such anguish waiting for answers, only to find out about Avalos and his terrifying spree. It’s a sobering reminder of the evil that can exist in unexpected places. Thankfully, the DNA evidence was able to secure a conviction and at least provide some form of justice and closure to her loved ones. Still, my heart goes out to them as they navigate a world forever changed by her loss.

I've been thinking a lot about the way Johnny Joe Avalos targeted women, and it really shows just how dangerous certain environments can be, especially for those viewed as vulnerable. Rosemary Perez's tragic death is a sobering reminder of the risks many women face just going about their daily lives. It's chilling to think that Avalos was roaming the streets, working seemingly normal jobs, and then preying on women afterward. Rosemary was a daughter, a friend, and more to people who cared for her. Her life mattered, and it's troubling to see how someone like Avalos can slip through the cracks until the damage is done. While I'm relieved that DNA evidence and persistent investigative work finally caught him, I can't help but wish there was a way to intervene sooner, to prevent other women from suffering the same fate. It's a tough reflection on how much more needs to be done to protect those at risk, particularly in communities where certain women are not always prioritized by the system. My thoughts go out to Rosemary’s family and the families of all the victims who live with the loss every day.
