Did anyone else find it odd how quickly the case of Deputy City Marshal Ed Smith went cold? I mean, it's such a tragedy that a dedicated officer lost his life in the line of duty, and the shooter was never brought to justice. The whole situation really makes me wonder about policing and investigative processes from that era. It sounds like there were little to no leads, and given the time period, they probably didn't have the forensic advancements we're used to now.
I can’t even imagine the frustration and helplessness his colleagues and family must have felt, knowing that his killer was never caught. It really must have been a blow to the community, especially when an officer is out there trying to protect and serve. This unresolved case just emphasizes how much of a mystery still hangs over some historical crimes. I’d love to know more about whether there were any follow-up investigations done later or any other leads that might have been pursued. It's so sad that Ed Smith's murder couldn't be solved, and he didn’t get the justice he deserved.
I came across the case of Deputy City Marshal Ed Smith, and it's been on my mind how elusive justice can be even after all these years. It's really baffling how, despite being a law enforcement officer, Ed Smith's killer was never caught. I wonder if there were any initial theories or leads that just slipped through the cracks back in 1902. You’d think someone would have witnessed something near the Sabine Hotel given the nature of the disturbance call.
The turmoil and grief that his family must have gone through knowing there was no closure are unimaginable. It’s a stark reminder of how dangerous the job is and how sometimes sacrifices don’t get the justice they deserve. To the current officers who still honor his memory—your service is commendable.
If anyone has come across any old documents or articles that might shed more light on this case, I’d be interested in hearing about them. These unsolved mysteries seem to hold so many untold stories.
