I just stumbled upon Lewis Markham Huffman’s story and, honestly, it’s left me thinking a lot about the volatility of that era. Huffman was only 27 and from what I gather, he was incredibly committed to his role as a Deputy Sheriff. It makes you wonder about the weight of responsibility those officers carried back then, especially at such a young age. It's chilling to think about how the unresolved tension and lack of proper legal infrastructure could lead a community to such drastic measures as taking justice into their own hands, as seen with the lynching of the suspects. There’s a certain tragedy in not only the loss of Huffman but also in the collapse of justice that followed. It must have been incredibly tough for both Huffman’s family and his fellow deputies, trying to process everything amidst the chaos.
