I was reading about the tragic events during the 1979 Battle of Flowers Parade and couldn't stop thinking about how Ida Jean Dollard was caught in such a horrific situation. It's unfathomable to imagine going to enjoy a community event and ending up in the middle of a nightmare. I've been wondering how the emergency response to the shooting was handled back then. Given the level of chaos and the number of people injured, it seems like a monumental task for first responders. It's clear that those who rushed to the scene played a crucial role in preventing an even greater tragedy. Does anyone know if this incident led to changes in how large public events are managed in terms of security and medical preparedness in San Antonio or elsewhere? My heart truly goes out to Ida's family and friends; such senseless violence affects countless lives beyond just the immediate victims.

I recently read about Ida Jean Dollard's tragic passing during the Battle of Flowers Parade, and I just can't stop thinking about the sheer terror everyone must have felt that day. My heart goes out to Ida's family and to everyone who experienced that horror. It's hard to imagine how a joyful community event could turn so deadly in an instant. I've been trying to piece together what might have been done differently to prevent such a tragedy. I know hindsight is 20/20, but I wonder about the role that mental health support—or lack thereof—played in all this. Attebury's history of mental illness and hospitalizations is quite alarming, and it makes me question the systems in place then (and now) for dealing with individuals showing signs of severe mental breakdowns. Could better access to mental health care and intervention have changed the outcome? It’s a complex issue for sure, but one worth discussing. I hope the conversation around mental health support can continue to grow stronger so we can potentially prevent future tragedies. Thoughts and prayers to all affected by this senseless act, and may Ida and the others rest in peace.
