I’ve been following the Kentucky Fried Chicken murders for a while now, and one small detail keeps haunting me: the torn fingernail found during the investigation. It’s unsettling to think about what it represented—a desperate struggle or perhaps Joey or another victim trying to cling to life amid terrifying chaos. It’s a reminder of the intense fear and fight for survival these young people experienced in those final moments.
The fact that the nail didn’t belong to the initially accused James Earl Mankins Jr. threw such a wrench in the investigation. I can only imagine how Joey’s family must have felt through the constant ups and downs over the years, waiting for some semblance of closure. This tiny piece of evidence, while it didn’t lead to Mankins, might still point to others involved and gives me hope for finding the truth and securing justice for Joey and all the victims. People often overlook these smaller details, but I believe they have power—it’s about keeping the search for answers alive. My thoughts and prayers are with Joey’s family and friends who have had to endure this long journey towards justice.
