I've been thinking about the bravery it takes for law enforcement officers to respond to dangerous calls like the one Deputy Habelt and his colleagues faced in Payne Springs. It's clear from his 43 years of service that Deputy Habelt was deeply committed to protecting the community. My heart goes out to his family and colleagues during what must still be a very tough time. I find it so difficult to wrap my head around the idea that someone who spent so many years protecting others could meet such a violent end. It's a chilling reminder of the risks officers take every day. This community truly lost someone special, and his legacy of dedication won't be forgotten. How is the local department doing now after such a loss? Do they have support systems in place for the officers and families affected by similar events?
