I've been reflecting on the role that local establishments, like Eva's Place, sometimes play in community tragedies. It's really bothering me how such vibrant places, where folks gather to unwind and connect, can become sites of such horror. I didn't know Bertha personally, but from everything I've read, she seemed to be a genuinely warm person, deeply loved by her family. What's unsettling is thinking about how many people probably saw both Bertha and Jason Little in the community regularly. It's chilling to think about how what seems like a normal night out could end in such tragedy. I hope that in the wake of events like this, communities can come together to watch out for each other more. I'm holding space in my heart for Bertha's family, as they have faced indescribable pain. Knowing that her family is from Ciudad Acuña makes me consider the pain felt across borders for families who face such losses. Let’s hope that with each case like this, we all find ways to support those left behind and work towards safer, more connected communities.
