Darion Baker was a 22-year-old African American man who died on February 21, 2018, in Stratford, Texas, after officers Richard Coborn and Michael McHugh fired at a stolen Infiniti sedan he was driving. Baker and a friend, Gregory Dees, had taken the unoccupied vehicle while trying to get home to Memphis after running out of money on a trip to Los Angeles. Stratford officers had followed the sedan to a Pilot Travel Center, recorded the plate, and confirmed it was stolen before approaching the vehicle.

With darkly tinted windows preventing a clear view inside, Officer Coborn struck the driver-side window with his firearm and then moved in front of the vehicle. The sedan’s brake lights came on but it did not move; officers then fired, killing Baker. Dees, the front-seat passenger, was arrested.

Baker’s family sued the city and the two officers for excessive force. Does anyone have additional details about the moments just before the officers opened fire or witnesses who were at the Pilot Travel Center?
