I'm new to this story and to this group- but I saw this story over the weekend as a missing persons flyer. Caught my attention as it's fairly local to me. I did some digging as well! I found her parents and their names. Mary's mother, Yvonne (maiden name Strope) is passed away now. And mary isn't listed as one of her children on find a grave. Her father Gordon Hogland and mother Yvonne had divorced. They both remarried, the mother remarrying about three times! The Mclulsky last name came from Mary's then step father at the time. The stepfather and her mother had filed for a business name and apparently owned, or attempted to start and run a beauty shop called "Jerry's Hair Designs" (Jerry and Yvonne Mclusky). The expiration for that ficticious business name would have been 1982. Leading me to presume this was what they were doing when Mary disappeared. Jerry the stepfather was also a Marine... I don't see any reports of which parent or person had abused Mary as she stated. Or which home, her mother's or father's, she ran away from? I believe both of her parents were living locally. What else is interesting that I found is, apparently, according to the newspaper, there was a massive strike going on at that time! On July 8th 1981, there was a piece in the paper outlining the strike going on in multiple departments, including the juvenile hall. It was stated that the superintendent, Peggy Thompson (now deceased) was looking to place all the girls in her care elsewhere. Due to the facility being shut down at midnight that night if an agreement wasn't reached. Some were to be transferred to other facilities, others she was trying to get orders for release, and others- she was attempting to "get in touch with parents for them to take their children back"... This being reported on July 8th, which would have been 7 days after Mary was reported as a runaway. The situation hadn't hatched overnight. It's likely Mary, and/or many of the girls there would have been aware of the problems with the staff and the contention between them and their higher ups. The newspaper also shows tons of job openings and the facility looking to fill a lot of positions. And they seemed to run regularly. So I think it's safe to assume this place was understaffed. I wonder if Mary found out she was to be sent home because of all this??? If someone at the home she was to go back to was also the home of her abuser- well that sounds like a reasonable reason to get out of there to me! I see what I've seen everyone else report- nothing at all mentioned about Mary in any papers. Nothing about her parents or any family looking for her at all. I did also find more than one sibling. Siblings from her mother and father, as well as new siblings from her mother and her other spouses. Perhaps it's the siblings that still hope to find answers? The juvenile probation director at that time, charles Villarreal, is elderly now but still alive. I found no records for the other name Christine Gibson who was also a worker there mentioned in the paper about the strike. I wonder as well how much anyone said, or what they said at all about Mary when they reported her gone. Or DID they even do it? Perhaps the facility let Mary's parents know she was gone and they reported her as running away? I also suspect highly as others have wondered- that the facility staff probably knew much more about her disappearance than was reported. Did they know the facility was on the verge of collapse from the impending strike and just allow her to go?... maybe they felt badly for her sending her back to an abuser but couldn't help cuz they had to place her elsewhere- so they LET her go? There was a historic riot there at Los Guilicos in years prior to this- in those reports, it sounds like they hadn't spared any effort retrieving escaped girls there! It's not THAT rural of an area- girls escaping during the riot made it to a liquor store on foot and we're picked up easily and quickly by local PD. It's said in a few places it's not clear exactly when she went missing. However it shows the report date as being July 1st. So even if that's not an accurate date, Mary's disappearance had to have happened prior to the strike on the 8th. Part of me wonders if Mary didn't just make it out of there like she did, and maybe out of desperation assimilated to the homeless population as to avoid going home? Living an off the radar life after that? Although, I don't know how the homeless situation was in the 1980s in Santa Rosa. It probably wasn't as advanced as it is now. Or she could have moved on to another area to go onto the streets, maybe a bus to San Francisco or another place she thought she wouldn't be found. I hate to think of that fate for her. But the alternative is much bleaker if she met with foul play after she went missing. In any case- I hope any of this added to the record of her story helps it to advance somehow! Or keep the story alive! I think many w
I wanted to share something that I think might be relevant to Mary Ann Hogland's case. I’ve been reading through old articles and noticed something that rarely gets mentioned. Back when Mary was placed at the Los Guilicos Juvenile Justice Center, the facility itself was under scrutiny for its security measures. There were a few reports at the time about other juveniles managing to escape as well. Given the high-profile nature of these issues back then, I wonder if there could have been more people than we realize who witnessed or knew something about Mary’s escape. It's possible that someone who was also there has information but hasn't come forward. Does anyone have more background on this facility or know if past employees or residents were ever questioned in-depth? It’s frustrating that there seems to be so little follow-up on potential leads from that angle.
Idk if any of them were ever questioned. But I wonder this as well! The juvenile probation director Charles Villarreal is still alive. I wonder if he would remember her.
Has anyone dug into the circumstances at Los Guilicos Juvenile Justice Center back when Mary Ann Hogland went missing? I find it curious that a facility designed to help lost and troubled kids would've had an escape, especially with the security measures you'd expect them to have. Were there other similar incidents during that time? The fact that she managed to get out and not a single lead turned up afterwards is troubling. If anyone has insight into the conditions there in 1981 or how frequently escapes occurred, it might shed some light on whether this was a unique situation for her or something more systemic.
There was a strike going on in July of 1981 there! The paper reported this going on July 8th. Mary was reported as a runaway on July 1st according to the sheriff record. I wonder if the staff just let her leave. Knowing they had to find placement for all the girls when and if the facility shut down from the strike. I see other reports of girls "escaping" or running away from the place we're quickly located and brought back. But nobody looked for mary. Very weird!
