I’ve been following David Eugene Young’s case, and something that really stuck out to me was the video footage taken by the neighbor. It’s sobering to think that someone witnessed such a horrifying event and had the presence of mind to record and alert authorities. I can’t imagine how terrifying it must have been to see that unfold in front of their own home, and it’s heartbreaking that David’s family had to see that footage during the trial. It must have been incredibly distressing. I wonder if the video significantly impacted the jury's decision. I'm thankful that the neighbor was proactive, but it also makes me think about the bystander’s trauma in these situations. We often focus on the direct victims and families, but those who witness the crime are also forever changed. Sending all my thoughts to them as well.
