Rickquese L. McCoy was 18 when he was killed in a mass shooting on 44th Street in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego on June 30, 2012. The attack, which also killed 34-year-old Stephen McClendon, happened around 11 p.m. and involved more than 40 rounds fired; many residents retreated indoors, shaken by the violence.

Rickquese’s grandfather, Ricky McCoy Sr., began knocking on doors to engage neighbors about their collective trauma. That grassroots effort, joined by Rickquese’s father Ricky McCoy Jr. and other 44th Street residents, pushed for trauma-informed training in local schools, mental health services for children affected by violence, and changes such as stricter gun regulations discussed at public events.

As of a year after the shooting, no suspects had been identified or apprehended and the case remained open. If anyone knew Rickquese, witnessed the shooting, or has information that could help the investigation, please share what is known.
