Hi all, I'm thinking a lot about the role mental health played in this case. It's just so hard to wrap my mind around how someone like Edward O'Neal, who clearly had existing mental health issues, was out on bail in the first place. The fact that his mother even warned authorities about her son's state is deeply concerning to me. I wonder if better mental health support and intervention could have prevented Derrick's tragic death. It's really painful to think about Derrick spending those last moments of his life trying to help the police identify his attacker. He must have been so strong to do that while suffering from such serious injuries. My heart goes out to his family and friends, who have to live with this loss every day while grappling with the question of how this could have been avoided. I hope this case sparks more dialogue about how the justice system handles individuals with mental health issues. It's essential that we push for changes to prevent something like this from happening again. Derrick deserved so much better. Thinking of his loved ones as they continue to seek justice.
