It's really hard to make sense of how someone like Jonathan Howard, with such a history, was able to walk free on such a minimal bond before finally being sentenced. I can't even imagine the fear and frustration Quiton's family must have felt during that time. It's good to see that Howard was ultimately held accountable with a 60-year sentence, but the path to justice was clearly rocky. I feel deeply for LaQuita Murray and her family, not just for their loss but for the added trauma of feeling unsupported by the system that's supposed to protect them.
The fact that Quiton was so independent and always there for his loved ones just adds another layer to this tragedy. Hearing about his love for basketball and how he was such a positive force in his community makes it all the more painful. It's evident that he had a significant impact on those around him. To see his name used to push for much-needed reforms in the bail system is both a testament to his character and a silver lining in a very dark cloud. It’s so important that these conversations continue so that no other family has to endure this kind of pain and insecurity.
