I was reading about Laura Etta Ashley and something that really stood out to me was how close she was to her home when she was shot. It’s such a chilling reminder of how unpredictable life can be. She was just going about her evening, heading home after grabbing some food—it’s something we all do. The fact that her life was taken so abruptly, one block from the safety and comfort of her own home, is just beyond tragic. I can't imagine what her family is going through, particularly since she was widely loved and respected in her community, not to mention a mother and grandmother. It makes you think about the importance of community safety and the random nature of violence. How do we come together to prevent these acts, and is there more we can do to protect vulnerable lives in our neighborhoods? My heart goes out to the Ashley family and all those affected by these senseless acts.
