I've been reading up on Patrolman John Wesley Sykes Jr.'s case, and I can't stop thinking about the incredibly short time he had on the force before his life was senselessly taken. He had only graduated from the Police Academy 13 days before that awful night. To think someone so eager and full of promise, just getting started on his career and eager to serve his community, was taken so quickly is a loss on so many levels. My heart goes out to his parents, who must have been so proud of his accomplishments, only to have their joy ripped away in such a cruel manner. It just illustrates how dangerous and unpredictable the job of a police officer can be, and it makes me appreciate the risks they take every day. I hope his family knows that his sacrifice hasn't been forgotten by those of us who continue to honor his memory. Does anyone know if there are any memorials or events held in his honor by the community or the department? I think it’s important we continue to remember and celebrate his bravery.
