I've been following Dorian Harris's case since it was first reported, and I can't stop thinking about how preventable this tragedy was. My heart goes out to Dorian’s family and friends who have to live with this enormous loss every day. A young life was ended over something so trivial—a $2 beer. It's unsettling that a minor theft could escalate to such a degree. This all brings up crucial questions about how we handle theft and other petty crimes as a society. Should store employees really be in a position where they consider using deadly force? What kind of training or policies are in place to prevent these kinds of situations from occurring? It seems clear that a theft shouldn't be met with a death sentence. It’s a painful reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when there's a firearm involved. I'm hoping this case becomes a catalyst for change in how similar situations are handled in the future.
