I've been following the Smithson case closely, and it's hard not to feel a deep sadness for the entire family. I wanted to focus on Tommy's love for reading and music, which seem to have been such vital parts of who he was. It's so moving to think about how he would get lost in a good book or be uplifted by a beautiful song. I imagine these interests provided him with some escape from the world's chaos and perhaps offered moments of peace in an otherwise stormy life due to his son's struggles. To me, this part of Tommy's life is a reminder of how important it is to hold onto the things that bring us joy and comfort—especially in times when life feels overwhelming. It's heartbreaking that such a gentle aspect of his life is intertwined with such turmoil now. My heart truly goes out to Patricia, Amber, Allison, and Jamie as they navigate these difficult days.
