I’ve been following the James Span case in Nashville, and something that keeps me up is the prior history of the suspect, Joseph D. Smith. He was previously convicted of second-degree murder back in 1988. It's so concerning that someone with a history of violence was out there, potentially putting others at risk. I can’t imagine the stress this brings to Span’s family, knowing that his killer may have had a history like this. Does anyone know if there are measures in place to monitor or assist individuals with such backgrounds to prevent violent acts upon their release? This situation is so tragic, and my heart goes out to Span's family. It's an awful reminder of how the past can sometimes cast a dark shadow over the present.
