I recently stumbled upon the case of Detective Sergeant James Higgins, and something that really struck me was how the suspect managed to evade capture after such a brazen attack. During that era, investigative tools were quite limited compared to today, but it’s astonishing to think of the manhunt that would have ensued after such a high-profile slaying of a dedicated officer. It makes you wonder how the suspect managed to disappear without a trace and whether he possibly walked among the townspeople as they grieved one of their own. For Detective Higgins’ family, going through life without answers must have been incredibly difficult. Seven children left behind and a wife having to explain why their father won’t be coming home must have been unimaginably tough to bear. The recognition he received all those decades later shows the lasting impact of his sacrifice and how deeply he was respected. I hope his family found some solace knowing his bravery wasn't forgotten. The courage he showed, especially having served in the Civil War, speaks volumes about the man he was. Would love to hear others' thoughts on how cases like this one continue to impact communities generations later.
