I just came across some details about the lynching of Zachariah Walker after the tragic incident involving Special Policeman T. Edgar Rice. It's truly disturbing to read about what unfolded in Coatesville back in 1911. The fact that a mob could so brazenly storm a hospital and carry out such a horrific act while the authorities seemed unable or unwilling to intervene is a chilling reminder of the volatile racial tensions of that era.
I can't stop thinking about the mentality of the townspeople at the time who not only participated but also took souvenirs from the aftermath. It's a gruesome reflection of how normalized such violence became, going beyond seeking justice into pure barbarity. Does anyone have more information on whether there were any attempts at justice after the lynching, or if the incident brought about any changes in how such cases were handled? It's horrifying and sad to see how hatred spiraled into such a brutal act.
