I’ve been thinking about the bravery of community volunteers, especially after diving deep into Wilbur Brookens’ tragic story. Here’s a guy who simply saw a fire and rushed out to help, not knowing what he was walking into. It’s just gut-wrenching how one’s neighbor can turn out to have such dark intentions. It must be a haunting memory for those in the Fayetteville community, especially the fire department who lost their chief in the same horrific incident. Has anyone discussed how this tragedy has impacted the local volunteer spirit? I wonder if those who were wounded or knew Brookens and Chief Cutchall found it difficult to continue volunteering after that day. It seems like the very definition of selflessness and bravery, to keep going when you've seen the worst happen right in front of you. I hope the community found some way to honor the sacrifices made by these individuals. My heart goes out to their families.
