I was reading through some accounts of the West Nickel Mines School shooting and found myself deeply moved by the Amish community's resilience in the face of such tragedy. One detail that struck me was the way they came together to support each other and the families affected, including Lena Zook Miller's. I've read that the Amish community's decision to forgive the shooter, Charles Roberts, was instantaneous. They didn't waste time harboring resentment, which is honestly something I find hard to fathom given the circumstances. This act of forgiveness towards Roberts' family—attending his funeral, even—was quite impactful. It serves as a reminder of the profound strength found in forgiveness and community. What I can't quite shake is thinking about how Lena was only seven, with her whole life ahead of her. Losing a child is a pain I hope no one ever has to endure. It makes me wonder how the families have been coping over the years, and how such acts of compassion have helped them find peace. Does anyone know how the New Hope School is doing today or if the community has shared more about how they’ve moved forward?
