I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of community in healing after such unspeakable events like the Tree of Life shooting. While researching, I came across a beautiful piece on how the neighborhood of Squirrel Hill rallied together post-tragedy. It's incredible how people of all backgrounds came forward to support their Jewish neighbors, organizing vigils and memorials to remember Sylvan Simon, his wife Bernice, and everyone affected.
It seems like there was an overwhelming show of unity and compassion during those dark days. Residents described the area as normally being very peaceful and diverse, which just makes this attack even harder to fathom. This is a tight-knit community that’s known for its tolerance and acceptance. I’d love to hear more personal accounts from those who were involved in these efforts or how the community has been working towards healing since then.
My thoughts are with the Simon family and all the families involved. Remembering their lives and continuing to promote that spirit of community feels like a vital step in the ongoing process of healing.
