Nicholas Joseph Colatrella, 83, of Gilbert, Pennsylvania, died on October 30, 2020. A retired truck driver and Korean War Army veteran, he was survived by two sons, a daughter, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Court records say Nicholas was shot in the face and head at the family home in Chestnuthill Township. His son, 49-year-old Rick Colatrella, reportedly admitted at the scene that he had shot his father and told police it had to be done. Rick was arrested and charged with criminal homicide; he later pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and received a 15 to 40 year state prison sentence. Records note Rick has a lifelong intellectual disability, was found competent to stand trial, and was ordered to undergo psychological and psychiatric evaluations and anger management counseling.
The judge described the case as very troubling and observed that appropriate mental health services might have prevented the escalation. Does anyone have information about the family, the home, or contacts who might shed light on what led up to that day?
