I was thinking about the impact that Officer Jason West had on the youth in Cleveland Heights. It’s so clear that he wasn’t just a cop to the people who knew him; he was a mentor and a role model. At the candlelight vigil, several parents shared stories of how Officer West would stop by the local schools to speak with students about staying safe and making positive life choices. A friend of the family said he even helped some kids who were having trouble at home find the resources they needed. It’s just so sad that his life was cut short by such a senseless act. This community didn’t just lose an officer; they lost someone who really cared about the future of its children. I hope we can keep his legacy alive and find ways to support the dreams he had for this community.
