I've been following the discussion around John R. Smelko's case and wanted to bring up the issue of mental health and crisis intervention training for officers. It's so tragic to think about how a situation like this escalated to the point where a life was lost. I wonder if there was any indication of what John's state of mind was at the time or if he was struggling with any mental health issues. There are programs where officers are trained to de-escalate situations involving individuals in crisis, and I can't help but feel that more emphasis on these could be beneficial. It deeply saddens me to see how these incidents impact everyone involved, from the victim and their family to the officers and the community at large. Does anyone know if Dayton has implemented any changes or if there have been discussions about improving intervention tactics following this case? My heart goes out to John's loved ones as they navigate this painful chapter.

I keep thinking about the 911 call that started everything that tragic night. Why was it disconnected? Was there some altercation or an emergency we’ll never know about? It’s so unsettling to think of how differently this might have turned out if that call had gone through or if officers had more information upon arrival. My heart goes out to John’s family and everyone involved who still has questions. The circumstances behind that call could hold so many answers, and it's frustrating not knowing what prompted it in the first place. There’s a lot we don’t know, and I can only hope that some clarity comes for those who need it to heal.
