I've been thinking a lot about the role of community leaders in tragic situations like the murder of Leontae Johnson and Choya Elmer. Rev. Alvin Scales from the GOD Squad mentioned the need to address the root causes of violence, and I find that so significant. It's essential that we don't just focus on the aftermath but also look at prevention measures.
The task of reducing gun violence isn't just on law enforcement but on all of us as community members. It's about creating a space where individuals, especially young people, feel supported and have alternatives to turning to violence. I can't imagine the pain Leontae and Choya's families are going through, and as a society, we owe it to them—and victims everywhere—to seriously tackle these underlying issues. How can we better engage with community programs or support leaders like Rev. Scales in their efforts? Any ideas or strategies that have worked elsewhere? We need proactive, sustainable solutions, and it starts with all of us taking responsibility.
