I've been doing some digging into old case files and came across the tragic story of Patrolman Owen Lockamy and Chief Jefferson A. Chason. It's truly a haunting reminder of the violence officers faced back in the early 1900s. One thing that struck me was how quickly the suspect, Tom Walker, was caught and brought to justice. Arrested just a day later in Dunn, NC, and executed by hanging within a month. The speed at which the legal processes moved back then is staggering compared to today’s standards. I can't help but think about how this must have impacted the families of both Lockamy and Chason, as well as the community. Just imagine the fear and the unrest following such a violent act. It's so important to honor their lives and the ultimate sacrifice they made. While much has changed in policing since then, their bravery and dedication are eternal. My thoughts go out to their descendants and the officers who continue to serve with the same courage today.
